Since the Middle Ages, the valley between the river Arbia and the city of Siena has been characterized by a high demographic concentration as attested by numerous religious settlements and thirteenth century fortifications. Among them was the stately castle with four towers visible from the Valdipugna Castle.
The fortifications were part of a network of castles scattered throughout the high grounds of the Arbia Valley, the Orcia Valley and the Chiana Valley which had the purpose of defending the Sienese border near the countryside of Florence and of Arezzo. In particular, the Arbia Valley had already been the theater of frequent battles between the Sienese, the Florentines and the people of Arezzo beginning in the twelfth century, thus the probable and suggestive origin of the place name “PUGNA”, a word which means battle in Latin.
The origins of the area, however, go further back than the wartime clashes according to the contents of a Papal bull issued in 1189 by Pope Clemente III addressed to Bono the Bishop of Siena which confirmed the rights to the Pugna Castle.
The same information is recalled on the memorial plaque affixed at the entrance of the present-day Valdipugna Castle which was built upon the ruins of the prior fortification, burned and almost completely destroyed by the Florentines in 1259 before the bloody Battle of Monteaperti.
