Owing to the foresight of those who first worked the land and recognized its fecundity, the Montalbano region has been home to the cultivation of grapevines and olive trees for centuries. Farmers working for themselves or for noble families like the Guidi and the Medici, recognized the land's predisposition for grapes and olives. The vineyards associated with Cantine Leonardo da Vinci cover more than five hundred hectares and are distributed over a territory large enough to guarantee ideal growing environments for the various varietals planted. In addition to Vinci and Cerreto Guidi, which represent the largest zones of production for the winery, the historic grape-growing comuni of Limite e Capraia, Gambassi and Monterspertoli also grow grapes for Cantine Leonardo da Vinci. Situated predominantly on hillsides, the vineyards are designed according to two systems: "a ritocchino" and "gira poggio" in which the rows of vines follow the steepest slope ("a rittocchino") and change to traverse the hillside where the steepness allows ("gira poggio"). (Essentially this means that the rows form an arch up the hillside, traversing it horizontally at the steepest part.) Rearing the vine this way is a reversal of traditional Tuscan methods and a modification of the most popular "Guyot" method, with its horizontal, spurred trellis. The new vineyards have been planted using the horizontal trellis and the density of vine stock has been increased significantly to improve the quality of grapes by limiting the production per plant. Most vineyards have southern exposure to the sun, guaranteeing maximum daily sunlight and favoring full maturation of the grapes. The grapes cultivated include the traditional Tuscan varietals of Sangiovese, Canaiolo nero, Trebbiano toscano and Malvasia del Chianti as well as varietals relatively new to the region such as Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Chardonnay. These last grape varieties have proved very successful, producing well-structured and elegant wines.
