The ancient village of Bolgheri is located in the Castagneto Carducci (LI) district. It extends between the hills and the strip of sea bound by San Vincenzo and Cecina. This is a part of the Tuscan coast that was dominated by the Etruscans in ancient times and has a very old wine-making tradition.
Count Gherardesca, founder of the small town that arose on the site of the ancient village and castle that were destroyed in 1393, gave a new boost to the economic development of this area in the 1700s and it became one of the most fertile and highest producing along the coast.
In just a short while, Bolgheri became one of the cornerstones of Tuscan wine production and a very important agricultural center. Viticulture increased considerably thanks also to the innovative activity of the Serristori family and, in particular, that of Luigi Serristori (1793-1897).
During the period following World War II, the image of Tuscan wine (and Bolgheri is not an exception) seriously deteriorated, especially abroad. A set of factors such as the fall in wine prices and the introduction of D.O.C. regulations, which maintained grape blending formulas that were already obsolete and yields per hectare suitable for producing quantity instead of quality, had brought Tuscan wines to a crisis situation.
It was only during the Sixties that the Bolgheri area regained a certain amount of fame due to the production of Rosé by Antinori and to the important innovations put into effect in the area by a few countercurrent companies.
From the ‘70s on, the Bolgheri area gained worldwide notoriety. The following great wines are born: Sassicaia (with the milestone first vintage 1968), Ornellaia (1985), Masseto, Grattamacco (1982) and, later on, S. Martino, Paleo, Guado al Tasso, Piastraia and Rubino dei Greppi.
Bolgheri has become successful as one of the most interesting and well equipped regions of the entire wine-making universe thanks to the work of a few enlightened people, among whom we must mention Mario Incisa della Rocchetta, wine grower Giacomo Tachis and Piero and Lodovico Antinori, and through the experimentation and use of “innovative” grape blends like Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. This search for quality and innovation has improved through the interest and excellent judgment of Veronelli, a well-known wine and food expert.
