Riecine is in the comume of Gaiole in Chianti and covers more than 24 hectares, which are mainly woodland. The main property includes our original vineyard that has been producing Riecine grapes for more than thirty years, as well as a section of the vineyard that was replanted in 2001 and a new vineyard that we will plant next Spring. We have several vineyards in nearby locations within Gaiole, including Vertine (planted in 1997 and coming into full production now), Gittori and La Casina (newly acquired and planted in 2001.) In a dramatic and exciting move for Riecine, we have acquired a substantial new vineyard in Montecucco, near Montalcino. One-half of this new vineyard has already been planted, with the remaining hectares to be planted next year. When all of our vineyards are in full production over the next several years, we will have more than 17 hectares of vineyards with perfect southern exposures. The intentional locating of our vineyards in different terrain and places provides Riecine with some small protection from extreme weather conditions such as hail and frost, and importantly, produces grapes with different characteristics and nuances so that we can produce complex wines that are still distinctly Riecine. Our vineyards are situated at altitudes between 350 and 500 meters above sea level. Grape composition is almost all selected clones of sangiovese, although we have newly planted one-half hectare at Riecine with merlot. The terrain is hilly and the soil is very rocky (except at Montecucco), with dry stone retaining walls for conservation of topsoil on terraces. The land of Riecine also includes close to 3 hectares of olive grove for Riecine's classic oil. All farm, vineyard and cellar work is directed by partner/farm manager Sean O'Callaghan.
