On the first slopes of Alta Valdera at 160 mt above sea level, between Pisa and Volterra, the farm Pieve de' Pitti lies, which stands on the ruins of the ancient village of Pava.
In the XII and XIII centuries the little unit in fact was a real fortalice, complete with a castle and a sighting tower. Today, on top of the hill, on the very spot where the central nucleus of the settlement was, is the eighteenth-century villa with chapel, belonged until 1794 to the family Pitti of Florence, from which it took the name.
The farm covers an area of about 200 ha, of which 30 with vineyard, 3 with olive grove and 50 left for the cultivation of cereals. The remaining areas are covered by woods or left under grass. The first vineyards date back to the half of '70ies, but in the last two years the owners have decided a clear renovation and increase of the vines, till the reaching of the present extent.
The whole area is moreover inserted in a project of territorial faunal rescue, aimed to the improvement of the environmental conditions for the restoration of the animal species of reference.
The cooperative, named Pieve a Pitti, includes four other farms and involves an area of about 550 ha, representing a reality of reference for similar initiatives in the territory.
