The new winery was constructed to be not only technologically advanced but also to have a sound environmental impact. This is an obvious confirmation of the dedication of the owners to the culture of Chianti Classico and Coltibuono's centuries-old presence in the zone.
Although it was conceived with criteria of respect for the landscape and its spirit, the winery has an absolutely modern aspect. Its design meets today's standards and displays a contemporary aesthetic clearly inspired by the great Italian architectural tradition of the classical and Renaissance periods.
The new winery makes use of highly advanced vinification technologies selected with the objective of producing wines of high quality in the simplest but most efficient way possible. Efforts have been made, through construction of a structure operating on the principle of gravity, to assure delicate processing of the grapes so that they will fully express their characteristics and their uniqueness. The winery has introduced a table for the manual sorting of grapes so that all defective clusters are eliminated; a conveyor belt to transfer the de-stemmed grapes to the fermentation tanks; vats of smaller size for separate vinification of grapes coming from different vineyards and a system for punching down the cap with pistons for managing the cap during fermentation.
Native yeasts are used in fermenting the wines, in an effort to respect and preserve the flavour and unique character of Coltibuono. The maturation of the wines in wood is carried out mostly in casks to ensure that oak does not dominate. When small barrels are used, as in the Sangioveto, care is taken to balance new and older oak, so as not to cover the fruit, whose characteristics must be respected.
We are a family of 4, Emanuela, Paolo, Roberto and Guido Stucchi Prinetti, heirs of the established Giuntini family of Florence, owners since 1846 of Badia a Coltibuono and it’s vast estate in the heart of Tuscany. It is through the remarkable history of this Chianti Abbey that we constantly find the inspiration and spirit to continue managing the complex organisation. The chance to transform an established ancient reality without betraying it’s important history is a thrilling and exciting concept for us!.
Through tradition we have acquired know how and a culture which allow us to remain a leader in Chianti, while following a respectful continuity. We know that the Value of Badia a Coltibuono does not only concern us, as we are the present owners, but the collective nature of those who, attracted and charmed by wine, oil and the value of a place like Coltibuono, decide to come and visit us here. Our commitment is to pass this property on to the next generations, not only as it has been passed down to us, but further enriched with it’s original heritage. The same quest for high quality can be found in our best wines as it is in ‘Grand Design’: both carry exclusive Italian values tied for historical reasons to the Renaissance.
Badia a Coltibuono is the first wine resort in Chianti, opening it's doors to travellers and visitors who want to share a truly unique experience. Here it is possible to encounter the magic of a venue, to observe the slow yet intense rhythm of a 1000 year old abbey and farm and to sleep in history. Guests can rest and relax in the magnificent Italian style garden or, during the summer months, around the large open-air swimming pool. For the rest of the year, Badia a Coltibuono also has an indoor counter current swimming pool, with an annexed Turkish bath. At 650 metres above sea level summers are temperate and the villa naturally cools in the evenings. 800 hectares of forests, crisscrossed with walking or mountain biking paths provide for a pristine natural backdrop. Facilities for house guests include internet point and 10% reduction on all meals taken at our restaurant, or enrolment in a day cooking class.
